You landed your first Fiverr or Upwork order from Pakistan. The client is happy. Then the real question hits: how does that dollar actually reach your local bank account?
I have freelanced on Fiverr since 2019 and on Upwork as well. I am based in Karachi, I run products at Islamic Desk and 12Monday, and I have been through the same bank visits and Payoneer setup that most Pakistani freelancers talk about in WhatsApp groups.
This post is the practical path I recommend: get the right bank account first, then connect Payoneer, Upwork, Wise and direct bank transfers so money ends up in PKR without drama. If you are still hunting that first order, I wrote a separate guide on getting your first order on Fiverr as a developer.
The short answer
Payoneer or Upwork can send money straight into a Pakistani bank account. You can also connect Payoneer and Wise in your setup. Keep the bank account in your own name with your home address so account creation does not get stuck. If you do not have formal job experience, open a freelancer account or an Asaan account. Some European banks can also send directly to your bank. The first time usually takes around seven days and one bank visit; after that the bank largely handles it on its own.
Get your local bank account right first
Platforms and payment providers hate mismatched details. Fix the bank side before you worry about which withdrawal button to click.
Own name and home address
Open (or use) a bank account in your name, with your home address on the record. When the name on Fiverr, Upwork or Payoneer does not match the bank, or the address looks incomplete, KYC fails and you waste days fixing it. Use the same legal name spelling everywhere, the one on your CNIC.
Freelancer or Asaan if you have no job experience
Many banks ask for an employment letter or salary proof when you open a regular account. If you are freelancing and do not have that paper trail yet, ask for a freelancer account or an Asaan account. The State Bank of Pakistan has a freelancers accounts framework for residents who earn from digital or online services abroad, and Asaan-style accounts are part of SBP’s simplified onboarding rules. Exact limits and documents depend on the bank, so ask the branch which product fits freelancers rather than inventing paperwork.
Paths that get money into your bank
Payoneer to your local bank
Payoneer is still the common hub for Pakistani freelancers. Clients and marketplaces pay into Payoneer; you withdraw to your Pakistani bank from Withdraw to bank. Payoneer documents withdrawals to local banks in many countries, and it has publicly partnered with Meezan Bank in Pakistan for easier withdrawals. Add the bank account, wait for approval, then withdraw when you need PKR.
Upwork: direct to local bank or via Payoneer
On Upwork you will see the withdrawal methods available for your country. Those can include Direct to Local Bank (outside the US) and Payoneer if you live outside the US and India. I use the fact that Upwork can pay directly into a bank account when that method is offered; otherwise Payoneer is the reliable bridge. Names on Upwork and Payoneer must match.
Fiverr via Payoneer
Fiverr’s main Pakistan-friendly payouts run through Payoneer: bank transfer powered by Payoneer, or into your Payoneer balance. You can only keep one active Payoneer payout method at a time. Fees and minimums change, so check Fiverr’s Earnings page when you set it up rather than memorising old WhatsApp screenshots.
Wise and European bank transfers
Payoneer and Wise can both sit in your toolkit. Wise can send PKR to a personal Pakistani bank account when the sender has the recipient’s full legal name and IBAN (starts with PK). Separately, in my experience some European banks can also send directly to your Pakistani bank. For those corridors, the same rule applies: account in your name, correct IBAN, and patience on the first transfer.
Compare the common routes
Use this as a map, not as a fee quote. Platforms change fees; always confirm inside your own account.
| Payoneer → bank | Upwork → local bank | Upwork → Payoneer | Fiverr → Payoneer | Wise / EU bank → PK bank | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where money lands first | Payoneer balance, then your PK bank | Your Pakistani bank (if method available) | Payoneer balance, then bank | Payoneer balance or bank transfer via Payoneer | Straight into your Pakistani bank |
| Typical use | Fiverr, Upwork, clients who pay Payoneer | Upwork earnings only | Upwork freelancers outside US/India | Fiverr withdrawals | Clients or agencies who send with Wise or from Europe |
| What you need | Verified Payoneer + bank in your name | Upwork withdrawal method + local bank details | Matching names on Upwork and Payoneer | One active Payoneer payout method on Fiverr | Correct IBAN (PK…) and full legal name |
| Timing note | Payoneer says many withdrawals arrive in about 1-3 business days | Upwork: often within about four business days once set up | Upwork: often within about 24 hours to Payoneer after setup | Fiverr lists ~1-3 business days for local-currency bank transfer via Payoneer | Varies by corridor; Wise documents PKR bank payouts |
First-time setup: about seven days and one bank visit
The first time you wire international freelance money into a Pakistani bank, expect friction. In my experience it takes around seven days, and you usually have to visit the bank once. After that, the bank handles subsequent credits on its own more smoothly.
- Open or fix the account (freelancer or Asaan if needed), with your name and home address correct.
- Create or verify Payoneer (and Wise if clients will send that way).
- Link the bank inside Payoneer and/or add Direct to Local Bank or Payoneer inside Upwork and Fiverr.
- Do a small first withdrawal so the bank sees a real credit and any compliance questions get answered in person.
- Keep CNIC, platform screenshots and IBAN ready for that first branch visit.
Do not schedule a large client payout for the same week you open the account. Clear the path with a small amount first.
Mistakes that delay your first PKR
Someone else’s bank account
Using a relative’s account “just for now” creates name mismatches and can freeze the transfer. Put it in your name from day one.
Wrong address or nickname spellings
Payoneer, Upwork and the bank all need the same legal name. Fix spellings before you request the first withdrawal.
Skipping the freelancer or Asaan option
If the branch keeps asking for a job letter you do not have, ask specifically for freelancer or Asaan products instead of arguing about a salary account.
Changing payout methods every week
Fiverr only allows one active Payoneer method at a time, and Upwork new methods can take days to activate. Pick a path and stick with it until money flows.
Wrapping up
Receiving freelance payments in Pakistan is less about a secret app and more about a clean setup: bank account in your name with your home address, freelancer or Asaan if you lack job papers, then Payoneer and/or Upwork withdrawing to that bank, with Wise or European bank transfers for clients who send that way. Budget about a week and one bank visit the first time.
